Amorgos Greece
Amorgos Island

Amorgos Island

Amorgos covers an area of 121 sq. km., with 112 km. of coastline and a population of around 2000 inhabitants. It can be reached by ferry from Piraeus port (138 nautical miles) and Rafina.

Located in the eastern Cyclades islands, Amorgos became one of the most famous islands in Greece after being portrayed in the movie "The Big Blue".

The barren landscape of the island constitutes for its charm. Hora is the capital of Amorgos and it is built in the interior of the island. It is filled with paved streets, arches, alleys and rocky steps. While you are in Hora we suggest that you visit the Venetian castle, the medieval Tower of Gavras, which today houses the archaeological museum, the monastery of Hozoviotissas and the old mansions.

Amorgos has two beautiful and safe ports, the port of Aegiali and the one of Katapola. The port of Aegiali has a heavy tourist action, showing at the same time all the characteristics of a traditional Greek fishing harbor. Aegiali is famous for its unique landscape, rare beauty and golden beaches, as well as several ancient monuments and graphic little churches.

Aegiali is the second port of Amorgos and it is much frequented. The settlement consists of three picturesque villages, Lagada, Tholaria and Potamos. From Aegiali you can visit several beautiful beaches. Katapola is the main port of Amorgos and it is 5 km from Hora. It offers nice beaches and an intense nightlife.

What will draw your attention, though, is the acropolis of the ancient Minoa, which is on top of the Moudoulia hill, offering a panoramic and impressive view of the Katapola bay and the blue Aegean Sea. It is also worthwhile to visit the church of Panagia Katapoliani and the remains of the temple of Pithios Apollonas.

For getting around the island you can use the local bus routes. Or you can rent a car or sccoter if you feel like exploring the island.

Some of the most popular beaches in Amorgos for swimming are: Agia Anna, Mouros, Kalotaritissa, Katokambos, Agioi Saranta, Maltezi, Egiali, Levroso accessible by footpath from Egiali), Mikri Vlychada, Megali
