Information about where & what to eat in Athens Greece


Athens has a wide array of restaurants, tavernas and ouzeri catering for all tastes and budgets. Around the center of Athens you can find almost any type of restaurants ranging from Japanese to Mexican, even for those who are die-hard fast food junkies you will be happy to know that they have McDonald's, KFC, Dominos and Pizza Hut if you get homesick.

Traditional Greek Foods

If you decide to go to a traditional taverna some of the foods to try are, souvlaki, moussaka, pastitsio, stuffed tomatoes (yemista). and greek salad (horyatiki salata) are some of the typical Greek dishes that Greeks eat.

Other things to try are feta cheese, tzatziki (sour cream with shredded cucumber & garlic) Most places have a wide variety of beers, ouzo and Greek wines to try out.

Breakfast:

Most Greeks typically don't eat breakfast in the morning they usually live on coffee and cigarettes. For those who get the urge to snack on something you can find little bakery shops around the city that sell flaky pastry pies like tiropitas (aka. feta cheese pie), spanakopitas, bougatsa (custard filled pie) and other offerings including small pizzas, cinnamon rolls, and croissants.

For coffee lovers there's a Starbucks near Omonia Square if you cant live without your Frappuccino. There are many sidewalk cafes that you can sit at that have filter coffee, frappe and traditional Greek coffee

Lunch:

Greek people usually eat lunch late (after 1 p.m) so some Greek restaurants and taverns might not be ready to serve but you can find lots of souvlaki shops and fast food places to grab a bite to eat. Good places to go are around Monastiraki and Plaka.

Dinner:

As with lunch dimnner is also eaten late, most restaurants and taverns don't start to get busy until after 9 p.m. Plaka and Psirri district are the most popular places for eating out as well as numerous other traditional tavernas and ouzeri scattered around the center of Athens that offer a long list of enticing hot and cold appetizers for starters.
