The Parthenon Temple
The Parthenon is an Ancient Greek Temple. It is one of the most famous and beautiful of all structures that stand on the Acropolis. In 480 BC. The Persians destroyed the fortifications and Greek temples of the Acropolis, which the Athenians then reaching the height of their ancient glory rebuilt in even more splendid style.
The Parthenon was dedicated to the Greek Goddess Athena Parthenos and was the largest of these new buildings.
The Parthenon temple survived the decline of Athens and remained in good condition until 1687, when it was partly destroyed by the Venetians. Inside the Parthenon stood a huge ivory and gold statue depicting The goddess Athena crafted by the sculptor Phidias, but has long since been lost.
Other famous Greek statues and carvings decorated the exterior of the Parthenon temple which many of these were sent to England in 1812 by Lord Elgin and are now on display in the British museum in London.
