The Temple Of Poseidon
About an hour and a half drive from Athens (70 km.) along the scenic coastal road of the Saronic Gulf lies Cape Sounion, home to the Temple of Poseidon. The temple is built on the edge of a cliff, magnificently towering some 200 feet above the sparkling blue sea.
Opening Hours: Daily from 10.00 until Sunset. Closed on Holidays.
Entrance Fee per person : 4 euros
History
The temple was constructed in 440 to 450 BC in ancient Doric style and is in memory of King Aegeas who died falling off the cliff. Lord Byron chose this very temple to carve his name on one of the columns in the 19th Century and which can still be observed today.

The cape is popular for its breathtaking sunsets and view of the Aegean sea, if you want to hang out on the rocks and relax but make sure you bring a bottle of water and maybe a snack too. Around the area there are a couple of cafes, restaurants and tavernas nearby as well as nice beaches for swimming.
How to get there
By the orange KTEL bus from Pedio tou Areos Square from 6 am to 6 pm every hour and costs 5 euros.
