Camping in Greece
Camping in Greece is a cheap and inexpensive way to enjoy your vacation if you don't mind giving up the luxury of a hotel room.
There are some 350 camping sites operating in Greece and the Greek Islands. By law all of them have to be registered under the GNTO operating license. They offer a wide range of facilities and services such as communal showers, kitchens, laundry mats, restaurants and mini markets on the camp site.
For those of you that are backpacking and don't want to carry extra weight, some campgrounds even provide tents, bungalows and cabins for rent. Ask beforehand if they provide this kind of service so you won?t get stuck without a tent. Prices vary according to facilities and services offered
When to go
The best time to go camping in Greece is from September to October and from May to July. The weather is still warm and less crowded
Where?
Anywhere you go in greece or the islands is great, now as to the best place to go opinions vary. It all depends on what you like, peace and serenity or college students parting and puking next to your tent. You decide...
Caravanning
Caravan camping in Greece with an R.V or motor home is an excellent way to see Greece and the Greek islands. Although free camping is prohibited by Greek law, many people do it anyways.
If you do decide to do it, try to pick a place that it kind of secluded. Don't try to set up your tent on one of Greece?s most popular beaches or your asking for trouble. *remember the movie ?midnight express?
Small villages that are "off the beaten path" and that have infrequent bus service may even have rooms that are very cheap or places to pitch your tent. Always ask first if you possibly can, of course. Go to some of the less popular islands.
Often you can sleep on the beach. If you are flexible and not adverse to "roughing it" you will still be able to find some of the most beautiful and peaceful spots on earth.
