Mykonos Island
Without a doubt Mykonos is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece.
Well-known as a party island, Mykonos lives up to its name and attracts a wide variety of international tourists; from Hollywood celebrities and millionaires to backpackers, gay or straight. There is something for everyone in Mykonos!Over the years Mykonos has developed into a touristy, expensive destination, but at the same a must to visit. Mykonos Town is a maze of whitewashed houses and colourful shops lined along the twisting alleys and narrow cobblestone streets, which in past times were intended to confuse pirates and now unfortunately confuse many tourists as well.
In Mykonos Town (Chora), you can find just about anything you need. There are numerous hotels, seaside cafes, discos, bars, restaurants, souvlaki joints, mini markets, souvenir shops, banks, ATM machines, internet cafes, all within walking distance from the main port of Mykonos.
There are many things to do and see in Mykonos, such as watching the sunset from the famous windmills or relaxing by the sea at one of the many cafes and restaurants along the seaside area of "Little Venice". It's also fun just to walk through the narrow streets and browse the various shops along the way. If you're lucky you will probably meet the ever friendly Petros the Pelican, which has become the islands' trademark and local attraction.
The best time to go to Mykonos is from May to the beginning of July and from September to the end of October, since the weather isn't too hot and is less crowded as well. If you're a party animal, then August is the time for you. Mykonos is jam-packed with tourists roaming the streets and sprawled out on the beaches.
From Mykonos you can catch ferries that make stops to other Greek islands along the way such as Naxos, Paros, Santorini and Ios.
Mykonos Transportation
Getting around Mykonos Island is fairly easy since there are regular bus routes from Mykonos Town to the surrounding villages, beaches and airport. There is also a taxi depot near the port. Taxis have standard rates for all destinations. While your on vacation in Mykonos, you should definitely go on daily trips with tour boats (caciques) that depart every hour from the main port of Mykonos that you can take to the surrounding beaches and villages. They cost only a couple of euros for a one way trip.
The airport is located 4km from Mykonos Town and takes about ten minutes to get to by car.
Another option is to rent a car or scooter, which is a great way to see the island and gives you the freedom to explore secluded beaches and sights at your own pace. (see driving in Greece)
